The New York Rangers had a great regular season in 2011-2012.  They became the number one seed and thus had and have home ice advantage for the entire eastern conference playoffs.  The Rangers came out and dominated Game One of the series against Ottawa.  They won that game 4-2 and looked like a number one seed.  In game two at home they had a lead with four minutes to go and let that slip away.  They lost the game and headed to Ottawa tied at one.  They then won game three to take back home ice advantage.  They had a 2-0 lead in game four and looked like they would be heading home up three games to one.  They couldn’t hold that lead though and lost another game in overtime.  The Rangers came home with the series tied at two games each.  They ended up losing game five 2-0 because Craig Anderson was unbelievable in goal for Ottawa.  They now face elimination in game six on Monday night.

The question is can the Rangers win this game and set up a game seven winner take all at Madison Square Garden.  I say they can, I don’t think they have played bad in this series but haven’t gotten some breaks, they lost two overtime games and then in game five the Ottawa goalie took over the game.  If they could of just won one of those overtime games they would be in really good shape right now.  The Rangers also have been playing without top line winger Carl Hagelin.  The Rangers have really missed his speed and they will have him back for game six.  He was suspended for the last three games and that has really hurt the Rangers.  I think they will come out on fire again and I think they can win game six and then win a game seven.

If the Rangers end up losing this series it will be because of their lack of production on offense and be considered an upset.  If they do win the series they may look back on this series if they end up winning the Stanley Cup or at least getting to the finals.  In hockey the seeding isn’t as important as the other sports.  You tend to see upsets more as the Flyers have already beat the Penguins, the Detroit Red Wings were ousted in the first round and besides the Rangers, the Devils and Bruins were also staring at elimination.  It isn’t over until it’s over though and the Rangers will have to play a really good game and try to send it back home for a final deciding game.
