Two days ago I discussed the trade negotiations going on between the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The negotiations have continued over the weekend and appear to be gaining steam.  The New York Yankees still want any team to kick in a substantial amount of A.J. Burnett’s remaining salary while there has not been much indication that any team is willing to offer up any more than $10-12 million of the remaining $33 million.  Despite this gap, discussions continue to moving forward as Buster Olney indicates.  Olney says that the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates have a lot of common ground and that the latter is the front runner (out of 3-4 teams that could be in the mix) in these trade talks.

I find it interesting and somewhat surprising that trade talks have made it even this far.  You might have come across the occasional Burnett defense post or a person here or there who still believes in the righty, but despite any peripheral stats that might support this optimism, the final results have just been brutal for two straight seasons.  Assuming these negotiations arrive to an agreement, I am very interested to see what the final result will be.  Are we talking a salary dump without much of anything coming in return? Does Brian Cashman get his way and bring home Garrett Jones?  Does the deal expand beyond Burnett?  Could Pedro Alvarez, my personal preference, somehow find his way into pinstripes?  There are a lot of questions I have at this point that I’m patiently awaiting answers for.

Despite this positive progression toward a trade, I still have to warn against getting our hopes up.  I realize that this is so much easier said than done.  Hell, I’m even having a harder time keeping my enthusiasm in check.  The sole thought of getting A.J. Burnett out of the Bronx is enough to get fans excited.  Add to that indications that the New York Yankees might even be able to get something in return and you’re going to have fans ready to explode in celebration.  Until this happens though, I’m going to try my best remain even keeled on this one.
