Brett Favre Does Minnesota Vikings a Solid Favor; Rosenfels doomed

According to Brett Favre in an interview with Al Michaels last night on NBC’s preseason football, he’s done the Minnesota Vikings a favor by coming back as quarterback. And because Favre has agreed to do the Vikings this favor, it means that the head of my favorite Vikings quarterback, Sage Rosenfels, is on the chopping block.

It’s not a surprise, but it sure is a bummer.

Vikings teammates Steve Hutchinson, Jared Allen, and Ryan Longwell flew down to Hattiesburg, Mississippi last week to convince Favre to return to the Vikings. According to Favre, Allen said something along these lines, “Hey, man, we understand completely. And we can’t argue with it. But we [the Vikings team, presumably] could really use a favor.”

And so, good man that he is, Favre magnanimously agreed to do the Minnesota Vikings a $20 million favor and return as quarterback for the 2010 NFL season.

You know, if three big guys flew by private jet to my house, asked me for a favor, and offered me $20 million dollars and a private jet ride to work, I’d grant them a favor, too. I guess. It’s a hard decision.

So, last night, Minnesota Vikings fans got to see Brett Favre in action against the 49ers. He went four-and-out and got knocked on his ass. Let me rephrase: his $20 million, very charitable, very gracious ass.

So, the Vikings pulled Favre and put in Tarvaris Jackson. Fine. If the Vikings want to play Jackson even after Sage Rosenfels’ terrific outing last week against the Rams, they can.

After all, the Vikings are going to give them all up after this year for Joe Webb, even though Webb should really be a wide receiver, right? Go ahead. Do it. Whatever.

I’m just not in total agreement that Brett Favre is the Minnesota Vikings’ best chance to go to the Superbowl. See, I’m actually a Sage Rosenfels fan, and now that he’s in his early 30s, Rosenfels is coming into his prime quarterback years. If I was Vikings ownership, I might have been tempted to save the cash and tell Favre to look after his grandson.

I’m not Vikings ownership, as it turns out. So, last week’s preseason game against the Rams remains an audition tape for Rosenfels. A good one. Hey, other NFL teams: we’ve got a quarterback that can throw for over 300 yards and multiple touchdowns. Anybody want him? Because we’re into geriatrics here in Minnesota.

But now, I’m going to surprise you. Despite everything I’ve just said, and all the complaints I have about the Vikings quarterback situation, I truly, truly believe that the Minnesota Vikings are going to win the Superbowl this year. I really do.

And it would be nice to win the Superbowl this year, because maybe then the Vikings will come back strong after a year without football in 2011. And there’s nothing good about the unresolved CBA and no football in 2011, except for this: we won’t have to listen to Favre’s waffling and whining, because he really won’t be able to play.

Brett Favre had better be worth his “favor” to the Minnesota Vikings this year. That’s all I’m saying.
