Shawne Merriman’s career in San Diego over after Chargers place him on Reserve-Injured list

San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was placed on the Reserve Injured list with a calf injury—which means his career in San Diego is over, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

By placing the former Pro Bowl linebacker on the Reserve Injured list, the Chargers must release Merriman once he’s healthy again—which means he can still play for another team. The injury took place two weeks ago during the team’s 27-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The former Maryland standout was selected in the first round (12th overall) by the Chargers in the 2005 NFL Draft and was once considered one of the top linebackers in the league. During his first three seasons in San Diego, Merriman recorded 39.5 sacks.
