The San Francisco 49ers are Full of Bunk

OK, my name gives away that I am a Chicago Bears fan. But this piece is more about the health of NFL players and less about this game on Monday Night. After seeing the hit on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith that knocked him out of last Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams by linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar, and I find it hard to believe he’s made a full recovery in four days. See the video for yourself…

Obviously this Monday Night’s game has HUGE playoff implications for both the Bears and 49ers. But there’s much bigger battles that are being fought around the league. To even suggest that Smith is symptom free set back the NFL concussion testing program 30 years. The NFL uses all the rhetoric about concussions, but it seems that guys will slip through the cracks. Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher suggested that he would fake his way through testing in order to play. This tells me there’s a loophole in the evaluation process. Hopefully Smith didn’t fall through the cracks.

I’m glad I cheer for a team like the Bears that is actually taking concussions more seriously than the 49ers. Quarterback Jay Cutler and defensive end Shea McClellin are being held out of the game with concussions. The Bears took their time to properly evaluate Cutler, and ruled him out on Friday. It was fair to the process and gave him time to heal. On the other hand, Smith was practicing on Wednesday. Something just smells wrong.
