New England Patriots: Has QB Tim Tebow Hurt His Chances Of Making Final Roster?

Tim Tebow

Joe Camporeale- USA TODAY SPORTS

Ever since the New England Patriots made a move to acquire controversial quarterback Tim Tebow in June, the signing has been the subject of much debate. He is arguably the most polarizing player in NFL history and sports as a whole, and that is not likely to change after his performance on Friday night.

Tebow came into last night’s game earlier than most expected after backup quarterback Ryan Mallett suffered an unspecified injury to his head in the second quarter.

From the moment Tebow came into the game, he struggled mightily. He had trouble reading the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defense all night, held the football too long on many of his snaps and struggled with his accuracy for the majority of the game. There was even a point in the game where he missed a wide open Aaron Dobson deep for an easy TD, only to be sacked on the play. His struggles on the night were evident by his stat line. He finished the game completing 4-of-12 passes for 55 yards. He also carried the football four times for a total of 31 yards.

With the Patriots already having a future Hall-of-Fame quarterback in Tom Brady as their starter and Mallett firmly entrenched as the backup quarterback, after Tebow’s lackluster performance, the Patriots may ultimately decide to keep two quarterbacks this year. If that turns out to be the case, Tebow could wind up being released by the time final roster cuts are due. In any case, Tebow must play a lot better than he did Friday night if he is to make the regular season roster. If he doesn’t improve his accuracy and decision making this preseason, his NFL career may also be at risk.

So, has Tebow hurt his chances of making the final roster with his performance Friday night? Should he be cut? Should he never have been signed in the first place? Is his NFL career in jeopardy? Do you still have faith in him? Feel free to comment on the subject in the ”comments” section below.

I am still holding out hope for Tim. I think he was trying too hard last night and maybe he has been over coached. McDaniels and Belichick knew the score when they signed him, and I am hopeful that they will stay the course through the season. The way Tim’s contract is written seems to suggest they did not plan for him to play this season, but there are playing incentives for 2014, suggesting the plan might be for him to be the #2 backup then.

Nicki, I tend to agree with everything that you have said except for the part about Tebow being the backup in 2014. I respectfully have to disagree with that and say that since the Patriots have invested time and draft capital in Ryan Mallett, I would lean toward him backing up Brady again in 2014, barring an injury. However, the team may make Tebow the backup in 2015 (if he is still on the team of course) since Mallett’s contract is up after the 2014 season.

I guess I don’t really understand why Tebow fans are so against him being a TE.

  • Farva55

Tebow just isn’t a good quarterback. Plain and simple. Nothing against him because he’s a good person- but he’s going to be better suited as a TE in this league and there is NOTHING wrong with that.

Farva, that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. I believe that former and current players get insulted about him moving to TE because it makes it sound like anybody who’s 6 foot something can step in and play with ease. This is of course, not the case. The reality is we don’t know if Tebow can catch or not. Some say he can’t throw but he has spent his entire career as a QB trying to perfect his passing ability. We have no idea if he were to be inserted at Tight End what he would be capable of. I wouldn’t rule it out as a possibility (Mike Vrabel did it well years ago) but I don’t think he would play full time there.

I simply fail to understand why people think he can QB. His throwing numbers are putrid, and as we’ve seen with “running QBs”- once the legs go, so do they. I don’t dislike the guy- I think he’s good for humanity in general but that doesn’t affect or weigh in my opinion for him to be a QB in the NFL.

Tebow is a good athlete but he is not an NFL talent. He’s been “perfecting” his throwing for 3 years now and may even be worse than he was when he started. The only reason he’s thought of as a running option at quarterback is because by the time he figures out what he ‘s suppose to do the defense is on top of him and he has no choice but to run. As for him playing another position, he’s never once said he’d be willing to play any other position except quarterback. Even if he did, to think he could ever take playing time away from another positional player is ridiculous. I get it, people like him, they think he a great guy cause he prays a lot , points up to the sky and acts like he’s some kind of messiah but can all the Tebow fans just accept the fact once and for all that he’s never going to be more than a sideshow act in the NFL!
