As most people expected, Michael Vick has been named the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback. He was front-runner ever since the team decided to bring him back, for what will surely be his last chance in Philly.

The competition behind Vick is as good as it’s ever been during his tenure and there were lots of fans who thought Nick Foles should get a crack at the starting gig. Rookie Matt Barkley seems to be a year or two away from legitimately competing for playing time, but he’s also good enough that you never known what could unfold this season. But as capable as the young quarterbacks might be, this year is all about the veteran Vick getting one more opportunity.

There’s no denying that Vick’s time in Philly has not gone to plan. After the ‘Dream Team’ comment, everything fell apart. The comment itself had little to do with the collapse, but it’s still a point where you can say ‘that’s when things starting to go wrong for the Eagles.’

The harsh reality is that Vick has gone just 18-16 in three years as the team’s starter and also hasn’t played a full season since 2006 (which is also the only year he started and played in all 16 games). He’s now matched up with a rookie head coach who will be unveiling his college style offense in 2013. On paper, it doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. In fact, I don’t like Vick’s chances at all to end the season as Philly’s QB. But still, given the team’s overall status, I believe he’s the guy for the job right now based on his experience.

I’m also not ruling out the possibility of a resurgent season for Michael Vick, but the odds are way against it at this juncture.
