New York Jets’ Record Doesn’t Speak To Their Strong Play

A lot is told by a team’s record, but at the same time, it doesn’t tell all. The New York Jets traveled to Gillette Stadium to take on their AFC East division rivals, the New England Patriots, and they moved the offense with ease and contained Tom Brady, but couldn’t come away with the win.

If one was to erase the beat down that ensued when the Jets took on the San Diego Chargers, they have been in a lot of close games with some of the best teams in the NFL.

The Jets faced off against the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos and most recently the Patriots, and they were in every single game until the fourth quarter. One of the main reasons why New York doesn’t have a lot of wins despite solid outings is because of inconsistent play on offense and critical turnovers. The Jets’ two weaknesses throughout the season ironically turned out to be their strength against the Patriots on Thursday night, even though they ended up with, well, another loss.

Chris Ivory is the MVP of the Jets’ offense so far in the season, and he proved it against the Patriots’ defense. Ivory totaled 107 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. The Jets preached about running the football, and they finally lived up to the talk against New England.

Despite some shaky play from Geno Smith as of late, the Jets have some solid pieces on their offense who will be there for years to come. Eric Decker, Jace Amaro and Ivory are three building blocks to a great offense, and now all the team needs to do is play with some consistency. Sure, the Jets have other areas to improve on, such as red zone offense and pass defense, but a 1-6 record doesn’t speak to the potential of this team.

The Jets may not make the playoffs in 2014, or even 2015, but this is a long-term rebuilding process that needs some time to develop. For the Jets to hang in there with some of the best teams that the NFL has to offer, is a promising sign for the future.
