Philadelphia Eagles’ Most Important Offensive Player Thus Far is Jason Peters

The Philadelphia Eagles have become known around the league as an offensive juggernaut (ranked third in total points and eighth in total yards), but so far in the season, the offense’s most important player is not the flashy running backs, nor the tall, strong-armed quarterback. Instead the most important person to the offense so far this season is the Eagles’ left tackle, Jason Peters.

The Eagles’ offensive line has been depleted by injury with starting center Jason Kelce and left guard Evan Mathis missing significant time this season, but Peters has been able to anchor the offensive line and keep the offense fast and effective moving down the field.

Head coach Chip Kelly’s offense requires having a smart and athletic offensive lineman, and Peters is a carbon copy of what Kelly would be looking for to lead his offensive line and protect his quarterback’s blind side. Peters is a two-time All-Pro and six-time Pro-Bowler, and is on his way to more of those awards as he has dominated whoever lines up against him, his latest victim being Jason Pierre-Paul of the New York Giants in the 27-0 victory.

Peters takes his role of protecting the quarterback very seriously, which became evident Week 3 against the Washington Redskins, as Peters was the first one to run over and protect his quarterback after a blind-sided hit following an apparent interception. Although it resulted in Peters getting ejected, it showed the Philadelphia fans that Peters was going to protect his teammates under any circumstances, which speaks loudly of the culture that Kelly emphasizes.
