2014 NFL Re-Draft: Mid-Season Edition

2014 NFL Re-Draft: Mid-Season Edition

The draftees from the 2014 class have not made a major impact on this season, with most of the players selected high in the draft proving to be disappointments. The top two picks, Jadeveon Clowney and Greg Robinson, have either been injured all season or have not made a major impact at all. So what would happen if the draft were to be held today, knowing what has happened so far? This is my 2014 NFL Re-Draft, the mid-season edition.

1. Houston Texans: Blake Bortles

1. Houston Texans: Blake Bortles

Original Pick: Jadeveon Clowney

Due to injuries and illness, Jadeveon Clowney has only played in two games this season, recording only one tackle and zero sacks. Blake Bortles has had his share of struggles in Jacksonville, throwing for 13 interceptions, but in Houston, he would have a much better supporting cast around him with Arian Foster, DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson.

2. St. Louis Rams: Aaron Donald

2. St. Louis Rams: Aaron Donald

Original Pick: Greg Robinson

Aaron Donald was selected with St. Louis' second first-round pick, but gets selected at No. 2 this time. Greg Robinson has started in just four games this season, and will now likely be the left tackle with Jake Long injured. On the other side, Donald has already recorded three sacks as a defensive tackle and has been a presence, especially in run defense.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Teddy Bridgewater

Original Pick: Blake Bortles

Bortles has been an upgrade over Chad Henne despite the turnovers, but with him gone to Houston, the Jaguars select Teddy Bridgewater. With the Minnesota Vikings, Bridgewater has brought a spark to a team that was devastated after losing Adrian Peterson. Week after week, he continues to improve with three wins in six starts.

4. Buffalo Bills: Sammy Watkins

4. Buffalo Bills: Sammy Watkins

Original Pick: Sammy Watkins

Buffalo traded their 2015 first-round pick to select Sammy Watkins, and so far it has paid off. Watkins is the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year at the halfway mark, as he has easily been Buffalo's No. 1 offensive player. In eight games, Watkins has 38 receptions for 590 yards and five touchdowns.

5. Oakland Raiders: Khalil Mack

5. Oakland Raiders: Khalil Mack

Original Pick: Khalil Mack

The Raiders have had a miserable season so far, but one lone bright spot has been the play of Khalil Mack. Despite not registering a sack, Mack has been a force at linebacker, collecting 50 combined tackle, with 39 of those being unassisted. Mack's best game was against Arizona as he recorded 11 tackles, 10 of them being solo tackles.

6. Atlanta Falcons: Zack Martin

6. Atlanta Falcons: Zack Martin

Original Pick: Jake Matthews

The best offensive lineman this season has not been Greg Robinson or Jake Matthews, it has been Dallas' Zack Martin. In Atlanta, Martin could easily have started at both guard and tackle, and could've given Matt Ryan better protection than he's receiving so far. Martin wouldn't have completely fixed the Falcons' offensive line, but he would definitely improve it.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Kelvin Benjamin

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Kelvin Benjamin

Original Pick: Mike Evans

Mike Evans has been good this year for Tampa Bay, but Kelvin Benjamin has been even better for Carolina. Benjamin has been Cam Newton's best weapon on the outside, and has actually outperformed Evans in all of the major receiving categories, including receptions (40 to 32), yards (589 to 460), and touchdowns (five to four).

8. Cleveland Browns: Mike Evans

Original Pick: Justin Gilbert

With a clear need at receiver with Josh Gordon's suspension, the Browns neglected that position and instead drafted Justin Gilbert, who has started just two games and has only five pass deflections. This time, Cleveland finds a replacement for Gordon in Mike Evans. He would be Cleveland's second-leading receiver and leading touchdown scorer right now if he was with the Browns today.

9. Minnesota Vikings: Anthony Barr

9. Minnesota Vikings: Anthony Barr

Original Pick: Anthony Barr

The Vikings drafted Barr with their first of two first-round picks, and so far it has been a good decision. Barr has been a playmaker this season at linebacker, recording four sacks and recovering three fumbles, including one for a game-winning touchdown against Tampa Bay. He also has 58 tackles on the season, with only 11 being unassisted.

10. Detroit Lions: Ja'Wuan James

10. Detroit Lions: Ja'Wuan James

Original Pick: Eric Ebron

Eric Ebron has been a bust so far this season, recording just 10 receptions, and the Lions would love to solve the right side of their offensive line with Ja'Wuan James. Detroit has played three different right tackles this season, and all have played poorly. James has solidified Miami's previously weak offensive line, and he would have solidified Detroit's, which has given up 24 sacks at this point.

11. Tennessee Titans: Derek Carr

Original Pick: Taylor Lewan

Tennessee has gotten little to no help from Lewan this season, and this time around, draft their next quarterback in Derek Carr. The Titans have gone through three different signal-callers this season, and have completely given up on 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker. Carr has not won a game yet for the Raiders, but he has been solid, throwing for over 1,700 yards and 11 touchdowns.

12. New York Giants: Odell Beckham Jr.

Original Pick: Odell Beckham Jr.

Odell Beckham Jr. missed the first four games of the season with a hamstring injury, but has been very productive since his return. With Victor Cruz out for the season, Beckham Jr. has been more of a focal point this season. After scoring twice against Dallas, Beckham Jr. had his best game against Indianapolis, recording eight receptions for 156 yards.

13. St. Louis Rams: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Original Pick: Aaron Donald

With Donald gone this time around, the Rams settle their questionable safety play by selecting Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Despite only starting two games, Clinton-Dix has already recorded 43 tackles, one interception and deflected three passes. The Rams' safety play was so bad this season that they had to trade for former Tampa Bay first-round bust Mark Barron.

14. Chicago Bears: Deone Bucannon

14. Chicago Bears: Deone Bucannon

Original Pick: Kyle Fuller

Chicago's defense has been poor at all levels this season, especially at safety. Simply put, Chris Conte and Ryan Mundy can't get the job done. Here, the Bears address this position of need with Deone Bucannon. Bucannon has been a thumper at strong safety with 38 tackles this season, and is a reason why the Cardinals have one of the best defenses in the NFL.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers: Kyle Fuller

Original Pick: Ryan Shazier

Ryan Shazier has been okay this season, but with the top corner still on the board here, the Steelers finally address their secondary with Kyle Fuller. Fuller has been excellent for Chicago until being injured in Week 8 against New England. He has been a playmaker so far, as he has already recorded three interceptions, forced three fumbles, and deflected six passes.

16. Dallas Cowboys: Joel Bitonio

Original Pick: Zack Martin

Zack Martin has been the NFL's best offensive lineman this year, but not far behind him has been Cleveland's Joel Bitonio. A second-round pick, Bitonio has had an excellent season so far, even without All-Pro Center Alex Mack by his side. Bitonio is a big reason why the Browns have one of the top rushing attacks in the league.

17. Baltimore Ravens: C.J. Mosley

17. Baltimore Ravens: C.J. Mosley

Original Pick: C.J. Mosley

The Ravens needed a linebacker in last year's draft, and they found the best of the best in C.J. Mosley. So far, Mosley is playing like a Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate. Mosley has done it all for the Ravens, recording two interceptions, deflecting six passes, and recording 84 tackles this season.

18. New York Jets: Bradley Roby

18. New York Jets: Bradley Roby

Original Pick: Calvin Pryor

The Jets have been a mess this season, and most of their struggles can be blamed on a depleted secondary. Calvin Pryor is a good safety, but isn't being used effectively, so this time, the Jets select Bradley Roby. The former Ohio State Buckeye has been huge for the Broncos, saving their first two wins with pass deflections. The Jets' secondary has given up 24 touchdowns and intercepted just one pass all season.

19. Miami Dolphins: Seantrel Henderson

Original Pick: Ja'Wuan James

With James now off the board, the Dolphins find another solid right tackle in Seantrel Henderson. A seventh-round pick, Henderson dropped due to character concerns, but had the talent to be a high draft pick. Henderson has started all eight games for the Bills, and has been solid in both run blocking and pass protection.

20. New Orleans Saints: Brandin Cooks

Original Pick: Brandin Cooks

After losing Darren Sproles to the Philadelphia Eagles, the New Orleans Saints seemingly found their replacement in Brandin Cooks. The former Oregon State Beaver has been a runner, receiver and returner this season, and ranks second on the team in receptions (43) and third in receiving touchdowns (two).

21. Green Bay Packers: Jace Amaro

Original Pick: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

With Ha Ha Clinton-Dix off the board, the Packers find their replacement for Jermichael Finley in Jace Amaro. A second-round pick, Amaro has been one of a few bright spots on New York's poor offense. This season, Amaro has 32 receptions for 285 yards and one touchdown, but imagine how much those numbers would improve if Aaron Rodgers were his quarterback instead of Geno Smith.

22. Cleveland Browns: Jason Verrett

Original Pick: Johnny Manziel

With the second of two first-round picks, the Cleveland Browns now find their next cornerback in Jason Verrett. The former TCU corner has played in just five games due to injury, but he has been effective when on the field. Verrett has started in all five games he has played in, and has recorded one interception, four pass deflections, and 19 tackles when healthy.

23. Kansas City Chiefs: John Brown

23. Kansas City Chiefs: John Brown

Original Pick: Dee Ford

With Ford regulated to mop-up duty behind Justin Houston and Tamba Hali, the Chiefs now find a way to be more explosive on offense by drafting John Brown. An unknown player out of Pittsburg State, Brown has been Arizona's best deep threat, and even saved the Cardinals against Philadelphia. This season, Brown has 24 receptions for 326 yards and four touchdowns.

24. Cincinnati Bengals: Ryan Shazier

Original Pick: Darqueze Dennard

With Dennard buried on the depth chart, the Bengals find another defender, this time with hometown ties, in Ohio State's Ryan Shazier. With injury concerns surrounding Vontaze Burfict and the Rey Maualuga's free agency this season, Shazier would have been an excellent fit for the athletic Bengals defense. So far, Shazier has 26 tackles and one pass deflection in five starts.

25. San Diego Chargers: Corey Linsley

Original Pick: Jason Verrett

With Verrett off the board, the Chargers find their center for the future in Corey Linsley. A fifth-round pick out of Ohio State, Linsley has played like one of the best centers in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers. With Nick Hardwick out for the season, Linsley would have been an excellent fit to replace him, or line up next to him at guard. Either way, the Chargers offensive line needed an upgrade inside.

26. Philadelphia Eagles: E.J. Gaines

26. Philadelphia Eagles: E.J. Gaines

Original Pick: Marcus Smith

With Marcus Smith struggling to get off the sidelines, the Eagles look to strengthen their weak secondary by adding E.J. Gaines. A sixth-round pick out of Missouri, Gaines has quietly played like a top-corner and even earned a starting job for the Rams. In seven games as a starter, Gaines has deflected seven passes, intercepted one, and recorded 35 tackles.

27. Arizona Cardinals: Calvin Pryor

Original Pick: Deone Bucannon

With Bucannon off the board, the Cardinals find another safety who could complement Tyrann Mathieu in Calvin Pryor. Pryor has struggled this season for the Jets, but who wouldn't with an organization as dysfunctional as them? The former Louisville Cardinal also has played out of position considering how poor New York's corners have been. In Arizona, Pryor would have been an excellent thumper.

28. Carolina Panthers: Allen Hurns

Original Pick: Kelvin Benjamin

With Benjamin off the board, the Panthers find their next Steve Smith in Allen Hurns. An undrafted free agent out of Miami, Hurns has been Jacksonville's best offensive weapon this season in what has been another poor year. Hurns has been targeted 54 times in eight games, and has recorded 29 receptions for 466 yards and five touchdowns.

29. New England Patriots: Gabe Jackson

Original Pick: Dominique Easley

Knowing now that the Patriots would jettison Logan Mankins to Tampa Bay, they turn around and find his replacement in Gabe Jackson. Jackson has the same mean streak that Mankins had back in college, and has done a nice job so far for the Oakland Raiders. With other talent surrounding him, Jackson would have thrived in Foxborough.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Preston Brown

Original Pick: Jimmie Ward

San Francisco's front seven has been decimated this season by injury, and a player who could have stepped in right away would be Preston Brown. A mid-round pick out of Louisville, Brown has started in six of eight games and replaced Keith Rivers in the starting lineup. He has been a tackling machine so far, making 60 stops as an outside linebacker.

31. Denver Broncos: Jack Mewhort

Original Pick: Bradley Roby

With Roby long gone before No. 31, the Denver Broncos now solidify their offensive line by drafting another Buckeye in Jack Mewhort. A second-round pick for the Indianapolis Colts, Mewhort has only started once for the Colts, but has helped solidify what was a previously weak offensive line. He also had the versatility to play tackle, and the Broncos have already gone through two different right tackles already.

32. Minnesota Vikings: Justin Britt

Original Pick: Teddy Bridgewater

With Bridgewater out of the picture, and no quarterbacks worthy of a first-round grade, the Vikings now settle their offensive line issues by drafting Missouri's Justin Britt. Britt has been solid so far for the Seahawks, and would have helped the Vikings' porous offensive line, which has already given up 30 sacks.
