New York Jets GM John Idzik Should Be Fired For Absolutely Awful 2014 Draft Class

If there is one thing that irked me about John Idzik the most, I would have to say it was this year’s 12-pick draft class that I am ready to call a bust.

Coming into the 2014 NFL Draft, Idzik and the New York Jets owned 12 draft picks, the most out of any team in the league. Currently, only four are on the roster, one starts, and two are on injured reserve.

One can point to what I believe was the most asinine pick Idzik made in choosing cornerback Dexter McDougle in the third round. McDougle missed most of his junior season due to an injury and was projected as a later round pick with potential. However, Idzik acted exactly like the New York Mets and general manager Sandy Alderson did with Chris Young, wasting no time, picking McDougle up as soon as they could like he was some prized possession. McDougle went on to suffer a season-ending injury in the preseason — go figure.

Then there are the fourth-round selections, 5-foot-9 Jalen Saunders and Shaq Evans, who competed with Stephen Hill in preseason for most dropped passes. Saunders was cut after a few games into the season for muffing two punts, and Evans suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason. But he probably would have had the same impact as Hill over the past two seasons, a receiver with a ton of talent with the one lacking skill needed for a receiver — catching the ball.

And Jeremiah George, the 5-foot-10, 220-pound linebacker who Idzik for some reason thought was big enough to play the position in this league. Needless to say, he was cut. Brandon Dixon, the sixth-round selection out of a small Division II school, was also cut. I’ll bet Idzik wishes he hadn’t done that. Anybody is better than the crop of corners New York is putting on the field, although undrafted rookie Marcus Williams did have a solid game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. Dakota Dozier is on the practice squad, and New York likely hoped he would have figured it out by now how to make his way to the 53-man roster. IK Enemkpali, the versatile pass-rusher, can’t seem to find himself a true home; he bounces back between the 53-man roster and the practice squad. Oh, let’s not forget to mention their first-round draft choice, the “Louisville Slugger,” Calvin Pryor. The only thing he’s been slugging is his butt around the sidelines. He has not played up to expectations, he’s been consistently late to meetings and was benched last week for Jaiquawn Jarrett, who went on to have a pretty good game for himself.

Tajh Boyd? I’ll just end it there.

Trevor Reilly and Jace Amaro are the only two bright spots of this 12-man draft class. Reilly, a seventh-round pick, has been a workhorse for special teams, while Amaro currently leads rookie tight ends in receptions. Amaro has been one of the bright spots on New York’s offense this season and shows a bright future ahead. Good job on that one, Idzik.

Like I said, this is certainly not the only reason why Idzik should be fired. And yes, Rex Ryan needs to go as well. But 12 draft picks? C’mon man.
