Alfred Blue Gives Houston Texans Options In the Backfield
With Arian Foster out of the lineup due to a concussion, many Houston Texans fans thought Sunday would be a tough game against the Cleveland Browns. Instead it turned out to be a piece of cake, and it was all thanks to a backup running back named Alfred Blue.
Blue rushed for 156 yards in his team’s 23-7 win over the Browns, knocking Cleveland’s AFC North title hopes for a loop. To be fair, every team in the AFC North has six victories, so one loss or win isn’t going to matter much yet.
Blue’s performance against a dominant Browns defense proved that Houston may have a viable option at running back in case Foster has to miss some more time. This is likely given that the NFL is not screwing around with concussion injuries. Many players have sat out multiple games due to concussions, and as long as Blue is producing, the Texans are likely to leave Foster on the bench until he’s at 100 percent.
If the Indianapolis Colts lose to the New England Patriots in the Sunday night game, then the Texans would be one game back in the AFC South standings. The Texans would be within striking distance of a possible division title even with the absence of a consistent running game.
Blue’s performance should quiet doubters that the Texans couldn’t win without Foster or a solid running game. Blue didn’t score any touchdowns, but he kept the offense moving efficiently down the field so that Randy Bullock could make some field goals.
More importantly, Blue kept the Browns’ offense from getting on the field.
After looking a little pale, it’s safe to say the Texans’ running game has a little bit of color to it. Foster is still the top option, but it’s refreshing to see the Texans have a viable fill-in with Blue.
