The Houston Texans’ 2014 season came to a disappointing close in Week 17. Sure, the team improved drastically from their performance in 2013, and they want out on a high note with a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the regular season finale. Still, there was much more expected from Houston this season. Here are the five things we learned from the Texans’ 2014 season.

The Texans started three quarterbacks and played four this past season. Even though Ryan Fitzpatrick showed signs of greatness, the reality is Houston’s top priority must be to draft a quarterback in the first round. The biggest reason is because Fitzpatrick’s leg injury that caused him to be placed on injured reserve may affect the way he plays going forward, especially at 32 years old.

Yes, the Texans missed the playoffs, which is hugely disappointing after there were plenty signs of promise throughout the season. Still, it has to be a good feeling knowing there’s a bright future under head coach Bill O’Brien. After having the worst record in 2013, O’Brien led Houston to a near playoff berth in his first season. That alone should give the organization plenty of optimism going forward.

Houston’s defense gave up a decent amount of yards through the air and on the ground, but one area they excelled at was takeaways. In fact, the 20 interceptions, 18 forced fumbles and 14 fumble recoveries could be a sign of great things to come in 2015, such as one of the top turnover-differential teams in the league.

Despite playing in only 13 games, Arian Foster ranked second in the NFL with 1,246 rushing yards. He also ranked third with eight rushing touchdowns. Needless to say, Foster remains to be the real deal, which is very encouraging for the offense going forward. If the Texans can figure out the quarterback situation and improve the passing game, the offense has a great chance to be very good in the near future.

Aaron Rodgers will most likely win the 2014 NFL MVP, but there’s no denying J.J. Watt is the best defensive player in the league. If it weren’t for Rodgers’ stellar season, Watt would be the first defensive player to win MVP since 1986. If anything, he’s a lock for Defensive Player of the Year, once again. Watt became the first player in NFL history with two seasons with 20-plus sacks. He also caught three touchdown receptions.
