The New York Jets are entering a very important part of their offseason rebuilding as the search begins for a new head coach and general manager. The previous regime spent many years establishing an identity of strong defense with cornerbacks as a staple of execution and efficiency, but last season was a complete debacle. The Jets couldn’t stop anyone on a consistent basis as the defense didn’t resemble anything of the past. As the search for new leadership gets underway, the Jets should break out of this defensive identity and join everyone else in the NFL in becoming more of a force on offense.
While many believe the Jets had a decent team in regards to running the football, they never truly committed to it. Truth of the matter is they never stuck with it like they should have and instead put too much pressure on quarterbacks Michael Vick and Geno Smith to win football games. This team was built on a ground-and-pound philosophy, as they didn’t have the right talent around them to support launching an aerial attack. A team can’t be successful if they keep changing their offensive strategy every few weeks.
The Jets have a ton of interviews lined up with plenty of talented individuals who will surely start making an impact the moment they get to work. It’s a perfect situation to be in since a new general manager has the freedom to help in the selection of their head coach and bring a whole new mentality to the team. With plenty of salary cap room as well as a top 10 pick in the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft, this is the perfect opportunity to turn the Jets into contenders again in 2015 with the right leadership that has offense in mind.
Overall, the Jets need to shake off the past of being dubbed a defensive-oriented team and start putting the pieces together to become an offensive juggernaut. It would be nice to see this team actually score touchdowns on a weekly basis and run the football consistently.
While many believe that defense wins championships, the Jets’ defense in 2015 can’t do much if the offense doesn’t contribute enough points to win football games. Defense can only take you so far if the offense struggles as much as the Jets did last season. If a team wants to win plenty of football games and win a division title, it all starts on offense.
