After interviewing four candidates, the Chicago Bears have hired a new general manager. Former director of player personnel for the New Orleans Saints, Ryan Pace, has been given the opportunity to turn the Bears around after a disappointing 5-11 season.

Pace has been with the Saints since 2001, mostly in the player personnel department. Previous speculation centered around the Bears hiring Kansas City Chiefs director of player personnel Chris Ballard as general manager and Dave Toub as head coach. The two have worked together in Kansas City and both have ties to the Bears.

Ballard worked in the Bears front office in the past, and Toub served as the special teams coordinator during Devin Hester‘s most electrifying days as a return man. However, now that Pace has been hired as the general manager, the Bears’ head coaching search may shift in a different direction.

One of the top candidates for the job, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, is interviewing with the team today and there’s a chance he could be introduced as the Bears’ new head coach. Since Ballard was likely to bring in Toub as head coach, perhaps the team didn’t want the package deal.

With a head coaching decision likely to be made quickly after hiring a general manager, the Bears could have their new man soon. While Pace has other options to choose from, him meeting with Bowles the day he’s hired may make Bowles even more of a favorite for the job than he already was.

Very soon, the Bears will have their new leadership in place. With Pace as the general manager and Bowles as head coach, the Bears may soon begin to find their hard-nosed identity once again.
