Current Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak is set to interview with the Denver Broncos on Sunday to potentially fulfill their head coaching vacancy. At the moment, Kubiak is Denver’s No. 1 choice to fill the spot, and if such a hire were to happen, the Ravens could potentially take a step backwards in their preparation for next season.

Kubiak, who came to the Ravens just before last season after being dismissed from his duties as head coach of the Houston Texans, inherited one of the most stagnant offenses in football during the 2013-2014 NFL season and turned them into one of the league’s better offenses this season.

Kubiak, who at heart is a ground-and-pound, run-heavy style coach, took a Baltimore offense that was 30th in the league in rushing in 2013-14 and completely reinvented the way they move the ball. This past season, the Ravens were the eighth-best rushing team in the league and averaged over 125 yards a game on the ground.

From Denver’s standpoint, the hire wouldn’t be much of a surprise given Kubiak’s relationship with the organization and its general manager. Kubiak was a backup quarterback behind current general manager and Bronco great John Elway, and what’s more, Kubiak was Denver’s offensive coordinator from 1995-2005 under head coach Mike Shanahan, during which time the coordinator won two Super Bowls.

A big part of Kubiak’s decision to take the job, if offered, is also perhaps the situation’s biggest unknown. The status of quarterback Peyton Manning and his future will be a huge factor in both Kubiak’s decision to go to Denver and his success upon arrival.

If Kubiak is indeed hired by Denver following his interview, the Ravens will lose what was a huge factor in their success this past year and be in a position in which they’ll need to find a replacement capable of maintaining the offensive success that Kubiak was able to cultivate. Baltimore is in a position currently where they may be able to contend as one of the AFC‘s top teams for years to come, but continuing to improve offensively will be a huge part of whether or not they can jump to that next tier.
