Cincinnati Bengals May Lose DB Coach Vance Joseph

Vance Joseph possibly leaving Broncos

Vance Joseph, the defensive backs coach for the Cincinnati Bengals, was one of the candidates in consideration for the Denver Broncos‘ head coaching vacancy after the Broncos parted pays with John Fox. However, all signs were pointing to Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator, Gary Kubiak being the front-runner for the job. It was confirmed this morning that the Broncos officially hired Kubiak as the new head coach, but that doesn’t mean that Joseph won’t be making his exit out of Cincinnati; in fact, now there’s an even greater chance he will end up in Denver.

Based on his history with Kubiak, I believe Joseph will be a front-runner for the defensive coordinator position in Denver. Joseph spent three seasons as Kubiak’s defensive backs coach during his final three years as the head coach of the Houston Texans. Clearly there is a camaraderie there.

Joseph also has a connection with the state of Colorado having played quarterback for the University of Colorado from 1990 to 1994, then becoming a graduate assistant in 1999. I’m sure returning to Colorado would be nostalgic for Joseph and become even more of an incentive for him to leave Cincinnati.

The major dilemma in this situation is that in order for Joseph to join Kubiak in Denver, the Bengals would have to release him from his contract which is not guaranteed. If these two coaches unite in the Mile High City, the Bengals will have to find a replacement for the coordinator. This could make them hesitant to grant Joseph the release he desires.
