2015 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears Should Take Chance On Brett Hundley or Bryce Petty

Brett Hundley NFL Draft

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

As Day 3 of the 2015 NFL Draft has just kicked off and the Chicago Bears are close to being on the clock in the fourth round, who should they take?

The Bears obviously still have needs to fill on defense in the front seven and perhaps at corner, as well as at right tackle on offense. But what about quarterback?

While they passed on the opportunity to trade the house for Marcus Mariota — a good decision, by the way — that doesn’t mean they should completely ignore the QB position. It’s pretty clear that unless Jay Cutler has a couple of seasons where he miraculously fixes all of his negatives, he’s certainly not going to last for the duration of his contract in a Bears uniform, and will more than likely be let go in a couple of years.

Considering all of that, the Bears would be wise to take a chance on a QB today, specifically Brett Hundley or Bryce Petty. There are issues with both quarterbacks, but also potential. If given the time over the next couple of seasons behind Cutler, with the right coaching, they could become options to replace the polarizing signal-caller in the 2017 or 2018 campaigns.

After all, one thing is for sure: the player to one day replace Cutler isn’t on the roster right now. Sorry, David Fales.

The Bears have seemingly done well in the first three rounds, drafting three potential starters from Day 1 of the 2015 NFL season, which is exactly what this team needed given the plethora of needs facing it. But now is the time to take some chances and draft based on future potential — and that means taking a chance on a young quarterback and developing him for the future.
