There’s no denying that the 2014 NFL Season was a special one for the Dallas Cowboys, and in 2015 they hope that their rookie class can help them achieve similar success.

So, let’s discuss the impact that this class of Cowboys’ draftees will have on the team in 2015.

Byron Jones, CB, Dallas Cowboys

It’s hard to predict what Jones’ impact will be with Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr still in the mix at defensive back. However, if either one gets cut before the season, I could see Jones’ biggest impact coming at right cornerback because Orlando Scandrick would then move to the slot.

Randy Gregory, DE, Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys addressed arguably their biggest weakness on defense, by selecting Randy Gregory to get after the quarterback. Gregory’s biggest impact is obviously going to come as a situational pass rusher, as I think he’ll need some time to adjust to the NFL; much like DeMarcus Lawrence did last season.

The Cowboys had an obvious need at tackle with the departure of Jermey Parnell via free agency, so they addressed that need by selecting Chaz Green in the third round. I expect Green to come in and be the team’s swing tackle from Day 1, meaning that he has to be better than any other backup tackle on the team. If he’s not, I can’t validate using a third round pick on him.

The Cowboys lost a pair of do-it-all linebackers in Bruce Carter and Justin Durant, so obviously they wanted to address the linebacking corps. They have a decent group of starters, when healthy, so I’d expect to see Wilson get most of his playing time on special teams; much like Anthony Hitchens did, until injuries thrust him into the starting lineup.

Ryan Russell, DE, Dallas Cowboys

Russell is a guy that I like, and that I think will surprise some folks. Much like with Gregory, I expect the Cowboys to work him in as a situational pass rusher. If he can gain some weight and strength, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him maybe sub-in at the 3-tech defensive tackle position.

Mark Nzeocha, LB, Dallas Cowboys

Nzeocha is very athletic and has impressive speed for a linebacker, but as is the case with many 7th round players, my expectation for him is low. If he survives training camp, and somehow makes the team, I expect him to be a special teams player, as the Cowboys continue to develop him as a linebacker.

Laurence Gibson, OT, Dallas Cowboys

If you look at Gibson’s measurables, you might think that this guy should have been a first or second round pick. Unfortunately, Gibson’s inconsistent play and lack of power make him a project at this point in his career. I think that the Cowboys are going to see if there’s anything there that they can work with, but I don’t see him making the team.

Swaim is the seventh tight end that the Cowboys have drafted since 2003 when the team took Jason Witten in the third round. None of the other guys have truly panned out the way the Cowboys would’ve liked, but that’s not to say Swaim won’t either. If he makes the team, I think his role is going to be limited to strictly blocking, as that’s his claim to fame while at Texas.
