5 Free Agent Running Backs the Dallas Cowboys Could Still Sign

The likelihood of the Dallas Cowboys signing another running back to their roster before the start of the 2015 season is slim, given the fact that mini camps are right around the corner. They are quite happy with who they have already picked up in this off-season, but injuries always occur at this time of the year so they will also keep their eyes open for a few possible candidates to add later down the line. Here’s a look at 5 possibilities.

Given that Jerry Jones passed on him in the draft 12 years ago and the fact that he’s now a 31-year-old injury-prone running back works heavily against him getting the chance to extend his career with the Dallas Cowboys. But he has been a productive back in this league for some time and he could add a veteran presence in the backfield if they needed to add someone later on in the year.

Tate is an interesting prospect given the fact that when he had a decent line to run behind, he was an effective back in the league. His numbers fell off with the Cleveland Browns last year, but they were far from being an offensive juggernaut. If he was given the opportunity to run behind the Cowboys’ offensive line and had a quarterback like Tony Romo to play with, his career could really take off.

It was a just a few years ago that Johnson graced the cover of John Madden’s famous football game and was once considered to be the best running back in the NFL. He has never come close to matching the numbers he put up in 2009, but again, he is a veteran presence that the Cowboys could reach out to if Darren McFadden gets injured or doesn’t pan out. He still averaged 4.3 yards per carry with the pathetic Jets last year.

2. Knowshon Moreno

Moreno is an inconsistent back who is coming off of an ACL injury he sustained in October of last year. He had his best season in 2013 playing with Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos where he was a 1000 yard rusher. If given the opportunity to play with the Cowboys’ offensive stars, he could once again be a productive back in this league once he is healthy.

Stephen Jones repeatedly refers to the New England Patriots picking up LeGarrette Blount late in the year last year to help them on their run to the Super Bowl. If Thomas is still available once the season starts, I see him being the most likely candidate the Cowboys will reach out to to join their team. He was never given the opportunity to be the lead back in New Orleans, but he was productive when the ball was in his hands.
