The New Orleans Saints entered this offseason with a hole at running back that was likely to be filled by Khiry Robinson. Mark Ingram had a great 2014 season and would have commanded decent money on the open market, but the Saints were able to reel him back in to stay in New Orleans.

Additionally, the Saints were able to bring in free agent C.J. Spiller — a dynamic back who complements Ingram’s hard running style perfectly. So where does this leave Robinson, who was possibly in line to start a few months ago? Well, he’s now a third-string running back in a pass-first offense led by Drew Brees.

Although both Ingram and Spiller are relatively injury prone, Robinson probably won’t see as many opportunities as he did in 2014 when he carried the ball just 76 times. Neither Ingram nor Spiller have ever started more than 11 games in a season and have only topped 1,000 yards once combined, but with a two-headed monster in New Orleans now, Robinson could be a trade chip for the Saints.

Robinson is still relatively unproven as he’s carried the ball just 130 times in his career, but he’s managed a healthy 4.5 yards per carry in his two seasons. In the three games he started in 2014, he carried the ball 47 times for 245 yards, which is 5.2 yards per carry. With many teams going to a running-back-by-committee approach, Robinson could be a fit with another franchise, netting the Saints a possible draft pick in return.

Since trading Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks and Kenny Stills to the Miami Dolphins, the Saints could use help in the “weapon” department. Brees isn’t getting any younger and his offensive line isn’t necessarily elite, so adding a weapon on the outside could be an option. Although a straight-up trade for a receiver is unlikely, moving Robinson for a mid-round pick could be an option to help the Saints down the road. He won’t contribute much barring an injury, so getting anything in return before he becomes a free agent this offseason would be beneficial.
