The San Francisco 49ers entered Week 17’s game against the St. Louis Rams with a 4-11 record in 2015. It’s been a year filled with injuries, underachievement and disappointments. Unfortunately, it sounds as if head coach Jim Tomsula, who is in his first year leading the 49ers, will be used as a scapegoat for the team’s troubles as reports are indicating that he will be fired following Sunday’s game.

Tomsula was selected as the best candidate to lead the 49ers following a power struggle between former head coach Jim Harbaugh and the team’s front office last season. He was put in a tough spot with a team that lost a bunch of players last offseason including Patrick Willis, Justin Smith, Anthony Davis, Chris Borland, Chris Culliver, Mike Iupati, Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree and Aldon Smith. With so many departures, there should’ve been sufficient roster additions to replace these guys, but there weren’t and that’s on general manager Trent Baalke.

Baalke has been the general manager of the 49ers since 2011 and his biggest accomplishment has been hiring Harbaugh to turn the organization around. While the team made three straight NFC Championships, and one Super Bowl appearance, Baalke also had a big hand in Harbaugh’s departure last offseason and the purge of players from the 2014 roster. He also is the one tasked with putting together the current roster on the field and he’s failed at providing Tomsula with the proper pieces to succeed with.

Outside of Carlos Hyde, there is not talent on the offensive side of the ball and there’s an impending contract situation with Colin Kaepernick that needs to be figured out. This offseason, the team needs a quarterback, two or three wide receivers, a few offensive linemen, a couple corners and defensive tackles to stop the run. With his recent track record, there’s no way Baalke can be trusted to rebuild this entire roster.

So if Tomsula gets fired tonight, remember that it’s not his fault.
