Colin Kaepernick Reportedly Open To Returning To Chip Kelly-Led San Francisco 49ers

After being benched and on the heels of multiple surgeries since, Colin Kaepernick‘s time with the San Francisco 49ers looked sure to be over. The hiring of Chip Kelly as head coach has done little to move that needle to this point, even with the assumption that Kaepernick’s skill set is a good fit for Kelly’s offense.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reported on Monday that the 49ers will meet with Kaepernick’s reps at this week’s NFL Combine, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network followed up by suggesting the quarterback is “more than open” to returning to the team.

Of course, there are significant financial implications attached to Kaepernick, since the $12 million he’s due to make next season becomes fully guaranteed on April 1. Concerns about his recoveries from left shoulder, left knee and right hand surgeries since November also hang over any decision to keep or cut Kaepernick from the 49ers’ end, which could include a trade at some point.

Kelly had some level of rumored interest in Kaepernick toward the end of his failed stint as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, so it’s not surprising that the door is not closed on the latter’s return to San Francisco. But health and money considerations will remain at the forefront of the situation, which may eliminate any legitimate trade options while also making an outright release a no-gain proposition for the team. When it’s all said and done, the 49ers and Kaepernick may simply be stuck with each other for one more season.
