- Penguins goalie Tom Barrasso stopped Washington Capitals‘ Michal Pivonka on a penalty shot in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals; Pittsburgh lost this game by a score of 6-2 (the Penguins ended up winning the series over the Capitals in seven games, 4-3)
Pittsburgh went on to play the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Semifinals losing the series in five games.
- Penguins Mario Lemieux, Rick Tocchet and Larry Murphy scored goals in a 1:29 span to establish a team record for the three fastest playoff goals
This was during Game 5 of the Patrick Division Final between the Penguins and the New York Islanders. The Islanders won the series in seven games, 4-3.
