Sixers Sign FA Royal Ivey
PHILADELPHIA, PA. – JULY 27, 2012 – The Philadelphia 76ers announced today that they have signed free agent guard Royal Ivey. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed as of yet.
Ivey (6-4, 215), the Harlem, NY native, was originally the 37th overall pick by Atlanta in the 2004 NBA Draft. After venturing around the league to different teams this will be his second stint with the 76ers.
The Sixers first signed Ivey as a free agent on July 28, 2008. The former Texas Longhorn played in 97 regular season games for 76ers before being traded for Francisco Elson and Jodie Meeks on February 18, 2010. Ivey will bring some depth to the point guard position if the Sixers don’t resign guard Xavier Silas. The one redeeming quality about Ivey will be his ability to play lock down defense at the 1 spot on the floor.
Ivey spent the last two seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, which advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2011 and the NBA Finals in June of 2012. Between playoff experience and tough defense, Ivey has the opportunity to help mold the young guards on the roster like Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner and make them better offensively. It will be a battle every day at practice to play against this young guard.
In eight seasons, Ivey has appeared in 437 games with 109 starts, averaging 3.4 points, 1.1 assists and 1.1 rebounds, and shooting 40% from the floor in 12.5 minutes per game.
