The Philadelphia Eagles are scheduled to face the Washington Redskins tomorrow at 1pm at FedEx field.  The game is pivotal for the Eagles if they have any hopes of making the playoffs.  The Eagles faithful will not only watch the play on the field carefully, they will closely watch how defensive coordinator, Juan Castillo, dials up the defense schemes.

Since changing jobs from offensive line coach to defensive coordinator, Juan Castillo has been on the hot seat.  That is for good reason.  The defense has all-pro personnel, but manages to get gutted every week.  It is not just the overall yardage allowed, it is the points this Eagles defense gives up week after week.  Through five games the Eagles have given up 132 points.  That is 26.4 points per contest.

Juan Castillo has not done a good job of playing towards the strength of his talent.  The cornerbacks are playing way too much zone.  Nnamdi Asomugha looks like a shell of the player he was with the Oakland Raiders.  Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie does not get the assignments that would maximize his usefulness.  Asante Samuel gets exposed for his terrible tackling.  Castillo has to fix what is wrong.  Immediately.

Additionally, the Eagles are not blitzing the quarterback like they once were known for.  Castillo has to send the linebackers loose.  Pressure up the middle in a quarterback’s face leads to turnovers, another aspect the Eagles defense is struggling.

It is time for Juan Castillo to “dial it up”.  No more excuses and no more “Rah-Rah” crap.  Get the job done or step down.
