Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl running back LeSean McCoy has been named the FedEx Ground Player of the Year.  Awards are presented annually for both the Air and Ground players of the year and McCoy joins Drew Brees as this year’s recipients.  As a reward for their outstanding achievements, FedEx is donating $25,000 to Junior Achievement Programs in each of the player’s areas; Greater New Orleans for Brees and the Delaware Valley for McCoy

The shifty Eagles running back was nominated for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week award four times, winning twice.  McCoy led the league in overall touchdowns with 20, 17 of which came on the ground (putting him in 1st the league with respect to rushing touchdowns and 3 ahead of Cam Newton who finished 2nd).  LeSean’s totals for both rushing and overall touchdowns eclipsed the Eagles’ franchise records held by Hall of Famer Steve van Buren, which had held steadfast since 1945.  He also finished fourth in rushing yards from scrimmage with 1,309, averaging 4.8 yards per carry.  Had he not been held out the last week of the season, he would almost certainly have been higher on the rushing yards leader board, as he was only 55 yards behind 2nd place rusher Ray Rice.  This is the first time since the 2003 inception of the awards that a member of the Philadelphia Eagles has won the yearly honor.

Despite a few games in which his immense talent was mitigated, McCoy had a breakout season, cementing his place in the upper echelon of NFL running backs with the likes of Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster and the like.  A threat as a receiver as well as a running back, LeSean fits perfectly into the Eagles west coast offense and certainly gets to utilize his athletic ability to the fullest.  Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles can only hope that McCoy does not become complacent based upon his success in 2011 and continues to work so that he can build upon this year’s performance and come back even stronger in 2012.
