The 30 Most Memorable Moments of the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles Season, #27: LeSean McCoy Sets Franchise Touchdown Mark
There weren’t a lot of bright spots for the Philadelphia Eagles throughout the 2011 season, but the brightest had to be the sensational play of third-year running back LeSean McCoy.
McCoy’s 2011 season ranks as one of the greatest offensive seasons by a player in Philadelphia Eagles history. He carried the ball 273 times for 1309 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and caught 48 passes for 315 yards. He topped 100 rushing yards six times, including a career-high 185 yards against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
And he was a touchdown machine.
He scored at least one touchdown in each of the first nine games of the season. He scored in 14 of the 16 games. And he scored 17 on the ground and three through the air, giving him a grand total of 20.
This broke the Eagles’ single-season franchise record for rushing touchdowns, which had previously been held by Hall of Fame running back Steve Van Buren, who rushed for 15 in 1945. McCoy’s 20 total touchdowns also broke Van Buren’s record, which was 18, set in 1945.
McCoy’s phenomenal season was rewarded with his first Pro Bowl selection. He was also named the FedEx Ground Player of the Year, beating out Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens and Maurice Jones-Drew of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
His accomplishments were one of the only positive moments for the Eagles this season. I expect that McCoy will be rewarded with a contract extension this offseason, keeping him with the Philadelphia Eagles for at least four or five more seasons.
