Philadelphia Eagles chairman/CEO Jeffrey Lurie has confirmed that the team will sign Brian Dawkins to a one day contract that will allow him to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle.  In addition, his #20 jersey will be retired by the team during their September 30, 2012 game against the New York Giants.  Dawkins, a long time standout at safety for the Eagles had spent the last 3 years as a Denver Bronco before deciding to retire.

Throughout the entirety of his 16 year NFL career (13 of which he spent in Philly), Dawkins was known as much for his heart and fire as he was for his intimidating play on the field.  Any player that has played with “Weapon X” describes him as a motivator and as someone who loves the game.  He was synonymous with the Eagles defense for many years, and was without a doubt a fan favorite.

Dawkins will finish his career having played 224 games, amassing 1,131 tackles, 26 sacks, 37 forced fumbles and 37 interceptions.  Despite the fact that he has been plagued by injuries for several years, the only time in his career that he played in less than 11 games was 2003, when he suited up 7 times.

This is definitely a classy move by the Philadelphia Eagle’s organization.  When Dawkins was released by Philadelphia, the fan base was up in arms, even if he may have lost ½ a step from his younger days.  Dawkins embodied Philadelphia; a hard working, blue collar player that wore his emotions on his sleeve, but wasn’t afraid to lay a hit on someone.  I, personally, am incredibly pleased to see Brian Dawkins retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.
