In a virtual “must win,” for the Sabres, Wednesday night, the Buffalo Sabres were able to get the job done. Even if the entire team didn’t  have much to do with it.

Ryan Miller made 32 saves to shutout the Flyers for the second time in this 1st round series. Both shutouts were 1-0 wins by the Sabres.

Last seasons Vezina Trohy winner was spectacular, thwarting everything the Flyers threw at him, preserving the win for the Sabres and a 2-2 series tie heading  into Game 5 in Philadelphia.

Like in Game 1, the Flyers did a lot of things, offensively, to be proud of. Though, once again, they couldn’t get a puck past Miller. The Flyers dominated the 3rd period, even while killing off a 5-minute power play to start the period.  The Sabres seemed content to back in on defense, and dump pucks into the neutral zone when possible, nearly the entire period. The Flyers had their chances, including a one-on-one between Danny Briere and Ryan Miller, which Miller obviously won.

Midway through the 1st period, Jason Pominville scored the only goal of the game.

The Sabres may have survived this game, but can’t be too happy with their third period performance. It doesn’t take a hockey expert to realize that Ryan Miller won the game for the Sabres.

While, the Flyers may have had chances, someone, anyone, has to find a way to get some pucks to the back of the net. You can’t win if you don’t score, no matter how well you play.

Lost in all of this, was the play of Brian Boucher, who made 28 saves of his own, and made his fair share of big saves.

Mike Richards was given a 5-minute-major for elbowing Patrick Kaleta at the end of the 2nd period. The play will be reviewed by the league to see if a suspension is warranted. It’s hard to believe Richards will see any further punishment, as the play clearly didn’t warrant a major penalty.  More on that later…..

Also, Jeff Carter suffered an “upper-body” injury during the 1st period and is officially listed as day-to-day. Also, more on this later….
