Last season, Matt Read played his first full year in the NHL. The Ilderton, Ontario native made his debut for the Philadelphia Flyers on October 6th against the Boston Bruins. He did not score, but he did record a shot on goal and tallied two blocked shots. The next game, he recorded his first NHL goal against the New Jersey Devils. Read started off the 2011-2012 campaign pretty hot with 5 points in his first 5 career games. The rookie then hit a learning curve, he was pointless in six of the next seven.

Many, including myself, thought that the rookie had some potential as a third or fourth line player. But Read soon proved people wrong. He contributed the best that he could. Read finished the year with 47 points. He has 24 goals and 23 assists. Not only was he a surprise and a big value on offense, his team normally scored when he was on the ice. Read finished the regular season with a +13 plus/minus. Whatever line he was on, Read was able to produce. He finished the season third on the Flyers in plus/minus and seventh on the team in points recorded.

Read also produced some points in the playoffs but not to the level that he had in the regular season. From the trade deadline and throughout this summer, Read’s name has been thrown in with trade rumors for players such as Rick Nash, Shea Weber and Bobby Ryan. The reason to believe this is because of the value this young player has and the potential the 26-year old could bring to an NHL team.

Personally, Matt Read has a great amount of trade value. He might not have as much as younger guys such as Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn but, if any NHL is looking to get younger and to free up cap space, such as the Anaheim Ducks, Matt Read could be a player that the Flyers may include in a deal for a player such as Bobby Ryan.

If the Flyers do not make any moves for the rest of the offseason, look for Matt Read to get even better. Maybe not numbers wise, but I do not believe that he will suffer from a sophomore slump, which could be enticing to NHL teams.
