Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

The Philadelphia Phillies seem to be waiting for another major league team to make an offer to Jimmy Rollins before they counter with one of their own.

With the news that the St. Louis Cardinals have re-signed veteran shortstop Rafael Furcal to two-year, $14 million contract, it is time for the Phillies to lock up Jimmy Rollins. The Cardinals had money to spend after Albert Pujols signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and it appeared as if they might go after Rollins.

By locking up Furcal, the Cardinals went cheaper, although $7 million per year seems like a steep price to pay for a guy who totaled just 368 plate appearances in 2011.

With the list of potential suitors growing thinner and thinner, it’s time the Phillies reach out and make an offer to Rollins.
