Sidney Crosby May Have Vertebrae / Neck Injury (New Light Shed on Status)

[LATE EDIT]
The Penguins just released a statement on their webpage regarding the issue:

The diagnosis of Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, is that Sidney Crosby had suffered a neck injury in addition to a concussion. Dr. Bray reports that the neck injury is fully healed. Those findings will be evaluated by independent specialists over the next few days. The most important goal all along has been Sidney’s return to full health, and we are encouraged that progress continues to be made.

This is probably the most significant news we’ve heard about Sidney Crosby’s status since he returned to the lineup back in November 2011.

Crosby has seen a handful of physicians over the past few weeks as a few reports have indicated over those weeks, but nothing was as significant as the one posted on Sportsnet.ca earlier today.

According to the report, radio show host Bob McCown (Sportsnet 590 The Fan) learned Wednesday from two ‘unnamed sources close to the situation’ that Crosby could be suffering from an injury to his vertebrae and that an MRI taken by a specialist he saw in Utah showed an abnormality with C1 and C2 vertebrae.

Both Penguins GM, Ray Shero, and Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson, have talked openly about this new development.

Sportsnet’s Louis Jean spoke to Crosby’s agent Pat Brisson who said: “The neck injury was reported by doctor Robert Bray in L.A. this week. We will seek confirmation from a third doctor in the next 24-48 hours based on the cat scans and MRI results.”

“We’ll see, hopefully, next week where he is (after) we get the reports from California,” Shero told media following the Board of Governors meeting during All-Star Weekend in Ottawa. “The thing with Sidney is we want to continue to look to see how we can get this under control and manageable … hopefully we’ll have him back here at some point soon.”

And according to a McCown (@FadooBobcat) tweet which I first saw on 105.9 The X’s facebook page,

Drs expect Crosby to heal and be ready for playoffs. Unclear if he even suffered 2nd concussion. Sid said to be very unhappy with Pit docs.

It’s funny how most of the significant updates on Crosby come when it’s least expected. BUT this has happened before (with Crosby news on Twitter that turned out to be totally outrageous), so we probably shouldn’t get our hopes up until we actually see him on the ice (it’s nice to wish though!).

THANKS, Brian! It does make sense, doesn’t it? It’s just a shame that it took this long especially when you thought he was getting the best treatment possible, but I guess when you think / treating him for one thing, you’re not looking for something else. I believe the only reason that this is coming out now is because he and “his camp” are frustrated (and I honestly can’t blame them) – that’s really not something to mess around with.
