Thirty-one-year-old center Mike Comrie announced his retirement from the NHL today. He made the announcement two weeks after undergoing his third hip surgery.

A two-time 30-goal scorer, the forward played in 589 regular season games with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa, the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He recorded 168 goals and 197 assists in those games, adding four goals and six assists in 32 career playoff games.

Comrie inked a one-year deal with the Penguins in 2010, but only played in 21 games due to injury, scoring one goal and adding five assists. Comrie looked good during the 2010 preseason, and it was ultimately a shame things didn’t work out here for him. He was a free agent at the time of retirement.

Comrie and wife Hilary Duff are expecting their first child in March.

Interesting: Comrie’s father almost bought the Penguins back in 1991. Thanks to Seth Rorabaugh at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for that note.
