Catcher Chris Snyder sustained an injury in the second inning of last night’s extra inning victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The extent of the injury was not immediately known, but the Pirates have officially announced that Snyder suffered a herniated disc in his back.

The 30-year-old is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow morning. He was placed on the disabled list today, but the team does not have an expected timetable for recovery.

Word around Pirate circles is that Snyder could very likely be out for the rest of the season.

This is a huge blow to the team for various reasons.

For one, catcher Ryan Doumit is only beginning his rehab assignment. He is on his way to the Class A Bradenton Marauders according to Jenifer Langosch, and is aiming for a return to the Pirates by late July.

This leaves the Pirates with Dusty Brown and Wyatt Toregas at catcher for the MLB team, at least until Jason Jaramillo returns from injury, which will not be soon.

The two players have less than 40 games of Major League experience combined, and Toregas’ 1-for-29 performance in AAA this season is anything but encouraging.

In addition, there is really no telling how this will affect the Pirates’ pitching staff which has been surprising so many people. Snyder has been credited with helping Charlie Morton complete his 180-degree turnaround. Now, will Brown and Toregas, career minor leaguers, be able to handle the newfound staff for the next month plus?

The Bucs will be seeking immediate help behind the plate, but where exactly it will come from remains to be seen.

One option could be Jake Fox, whom the Baltimore Orioles recently placed on waivers. The 28-year-old is hitting just .188 with two home runs in 52 plate appearances this season, but would provide the team with some Major League experience behind the plate.

Another option could be Bengie Molina, who is currently a free agent. Molina, 36, hit .249 in a combined 118 games for the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, as well as the runner-up Texas Rangers.

Molina would provide the Bucs with more than ten years of Major League experience.

One Rant to “Chris Snyder, Ryan Doumit Injury Updates; Pittsbur...”

  1. Jer says:

Yep. In the top of the 9th, Mike McKenry came up to bat with the bases loaded and did nothing. A real major league catcher would be huge for this team at this time. Instead we’re stuck with awful career minor leaguers. Eric Fryer is doing well in AAA and the Pirates refuse to call him up, just like Chase D’Aurnaud and Alex Presley.

This still has the potential to be a good season for the Pirates and it seems like Neal Huntington is more worried about saving Bob Nutting money long term.
