Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert seems very determined in keeping wide receiver Mike Wallace in a Steeler uniform. Wallace, a three-year veteran and a Pro Bowler, has been the center of attention within the organization this offseason.

The team’s leading receiver in 2011 said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he would flirt with the idea of playing for the New England Patriots or the San Francisco 49ers.

Wallace would definitely be a very good fit for both teams, and could be the missing piece that could put either team over the top.

Wallace’s display of honesty to the public should give Colbert more of an incentive to do what ever he can to keep the wide receiver in the Steel City.

The Steelers are one of few teams in the league that are facing major salary cap issues. Thus far, Colbert and the rest of the front office has done what they can to make more cap room by restructuring the contracts of current players.

As of now, tackle Willie Colon, cornerback Ike Taylor, linebackers LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons have restructured their contracts so that the franchise can meet the $120 million salary cap required by the NFL.

In addition, just today, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger added his name to the list of players who restructured their contract. Roethlisberger’s contract facelift cleared about $8 million worth of salary cap room, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

More moves are expected to be made in the near future to make room for Wallace, according to Colbert. Here’s what he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about the situation:

“We’re going to do everything we can to keep Mike Wallace with the Steelers,” Colbert said.

Colbert continued to say what was going to be done in order to make it possible to retain Wallace.

“We’ve already had terminations.” Colbert added, “There will be more to come.”
