NFL Rumors: Pittsburgh Steelers LT Mike Adams Will Miss Next Two Preseason Games?
In the first preseason game of 2012 for the Pittsburgh Steelers, rookie offensive tackle Mike Adams left the game four plays into the second offensive series with an injury to his right knee.
Seeing his first action in the NFL, Adams struggled at times, giving up two sacks in this time on the field.
With the possibility of the second-round pick being out for the next two weeks, the question is how the Steelers will go about filling the left tackle position.
Nine-year veteran offensive tackle Max Starks is on the physically unable to perform list, so that take him out of the equation. It will look as if Trai Essex will fill the void left by Adams for the next two games.
Adams’ injury will definitely give second-year offensive tackles Kyle Jolly and Chris Scott will more reps at the left tackle position in the up coming preseason games.
Looking at how Adams faired in his first game action, and taking into consideration that head coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t had any extremely great things to say about Adams’ production thus far, I think that it will be safe to say that Essex will be the starting left tackle for the remainder of the preseason. Furthermore, he just might be the starter going into Week 1 of the regular season as well.
Having Essex at left tackle for now will make quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the rest of the Steeler faithful feel more comfortable knowing that the face of the franchise will have better protection on his blindside for the time being.
I hope that Adams’ recovery is a speedy one, and he’ll be better acclimated to the transition from college to professional football quickly. Left tackle is probably the most important position on the offensive line for the Steelers, and Adams can be the one to fill that spot for the next 10 years.
