Shaq Negotiating with WWE to Appear at Wrestlemania 28
According to Yahoo Sports, Shaquille O’neal is in talks with WWE to appear in a match at Wrestlemania. Shaq’s former home Miami will host the event this year, which takes place on April 1st. Shaq is an admitted wrestling fan, and guest-hosted Monday Night Raw back in 2009. During that event Shaq had a run in with The Big Show, and now officials are trying to set up a match between the two at Wrestlemania.
WWE always brings in a celebrity of some type for Wrestlemania. I’m glad they’re looking at Shaq, because there are a lot worse choices that could be made. The only other legitimate celebrity/athlete match in history was Lawrence Taylor vs. Bam Bam Bigelow at Wresltemania 11. It’s always more interesting when the wrestlers are evenly matched. Shaq and Big Show are both over 7 foot tall and 300 lbs. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to see these guys in a legit fight?
Bringing in Shaq is great for Pay Per View buys, and it puts people in the seats. Shaq’s fans that normally wouldn’t watch wrestling will buy this PPV just to see him. People in Miami will buy tickets to see him in person. Shaq still has plenty of popularity. Even though he is retired, he still is on TV every week on TNT’s Inside the NBA. Most people around the world know who he is. WWE made money off of Floyd Mayweather, they will make more off of Shaq. Not only was the Mayweather vs Big Show match unrealistic (even for WWE), Mayweather is not even close to the popularity of Shaq.
I hope this deal gets done soon. After watching ‘Snookie’ in a mixed tag team match at last year’s event, I’m very thankful ‘The Situation’ did not get a call from Vince McMahon this year. Shaq vs. Big Show is the right celebrity match for Wrestlemania. People have wanted to see Shaq in match for years now, and he is finally free from the NBA to do it.
