The Chicago Bears are one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now as they’re coming off their fifth-straight win against the San Diego on Chargers. While this team looks destined to clinch a spot in the 2012 postseason, it looks like the Bears will have to continue their playoff run without their star quarterback Jay Cutler.

According to Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune via Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk.com, Cutler is expected to miss 6-8 weeks after breaking the thumb of his throwing hand against the Chargers on Sunday. With Cutler out, the Bears will rely on Caleb Hanie at quarterback.

Two sources confirm that Cutler will be sidelined for 6 to 8 weeks, but the Bears have no plans to place him on injured reserve.

As devastating as this news is, there may be some hope for Cutler and the Bears when it comes to the playoffs. Rosenthal pointed out how the timetable could allow Cutler to return in time for the first week of the playoffs and Chicago has a favorable schedule over the final six weeks–so Bears fans should keep their fingers crossed.
