Three Denver Broncos Suspended for Performance Enhancing Substances

The NFL announced this afternoon Denver Broncos D.J. Williams, Ryan McBean, and Virgil Green have been suspended multiple games for the 2012-2013 season for violation of the league’s policy on performance enhancing drug use.

DT McBean and LB Williams have been suspended for the first six games of the Broncos’ season without pay, while TE Green has been suspended without pay for the team’s first four games.

Williams is one of two that has spoken to the charges, stating:

We proved — conclusively — at the NFL hearing on this matter that the NFL and its specimen collector wholly failed in their duties to safeguard and process my specimen properly … We will be vigorously pursuing my rights in the judicial system. My suspension is unjust; the NFL has undermined and corrupted its own steroid policy.

It will be interesting to see how valid D.J. Williams’ argument may be given the recent overturn of a proposed 50-game suspension of Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun due to failures in the chain of custody during the collection of his urine specimen.

Virgil Green released the following statement to ESPN’s Josina Anderson:

I was suspended for four games for taking ADHD medication prior to obtaining an exemption from the league. I have now obtained the proper exemption to take the medication that has been prescribed to me to treat my condition. I apologize to my teammates, coaches and fans for my mistake and will make sure to never let anything like this happen again.

The question here is, why would ADHD medication show up as a performance enhancing substance, regardless of whether or not Green obtained the necessary exemption from the NFL?

As of yet, Ryan McBean has not made a statement to the press.

These drug test failures– regardless of how they shake out– are an unwelcome distraction for a Denver Broncos team that hosts Peyton Manning this weekend, in the first attempt of many to sell the former Colts quarterback on their team’s future success.

Representatives from the Broncos have stated they are aware of the pending investigation but refused to release a full statement at this time.
