Washington Redskins And London Fletcher Getting Closer To Deal
Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

According to NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, the Washington Redskins and linebacker London Fletcher are “making progress” on a new deal. Both sides want a deal done before offseason workouts begin on Monday. This means that we can definitely expect a deal to be announced over the weekend. It is unlikely that the two sides agree to terms today.

La Canfora states that there is a “real push being made” by both sides. Certainly, Fletcher and the Redskins don’t want the contract situation to become a distraction. I don’t think a tiny contract situation can compare to the antics of one Albert Haynesworth, but maybe they’ve finally learned a lesson.

Fletcher has been in the league for 14 years now, and remains the leader on defense for the Redskins. Though 36 years old, he’s still putting up solid numbers. In 2011, Fletcher finished with 166 total tackles. He also forced three fumbles and picked off two passes. For the time being, Fletcher remains the best option at middle linebacker for Washington.

Remember, the Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys were both handed cap-space penalties this offseason, which means that the Redskins don’t really have any other options at middle linebacker. Of course, Fletcher is 36 so it’s assumed that he is the short-term solution. I imagine this being a one-year deal, maybe with an option for a second year.

Anything more than a two-year deal would be absurd, but you never know with the Washington Redskins. They’ve made some questionable moves, the most recent one coming today with the signing of Tanard Jackson.

Update: London Fletcher has agreed to terms on a new deal with the Washington Redskins, according to a source.
