Tim Tebow: A George Costanza Theory on Why Tim Tebow Should Start for the New York Jets

If there is one thing I know in life, it’s Seinfeld. Whether it’s quotes, trivia, or random characters, I know it all. In fact, one day night in college when we didn’t have our dish installed yet, I made the ultimate Seinfeld trivia quiz, including a trivia question from each and every episode. Now that I’ve said that, what does Seinfeld have to do with New York Jets‘ quarterback Tim Tebow?

In the The Pez Dispenser episode, George Costanza has a problem with his current girlfriend and senses a break-up on the horizon. The girlfriend has all the leverage in the relationship (Tim Tebow) because she dictates what the couple does, while George (Mark Sanchez, Rex Ryan) can do nothing about it. That’s when Kramer cooks up this little scheme that is put into motion:

The preemptive breakup is a bold, daring move that allows George to regain the upper hand in the relationship. It worked perfectly for George, until the woman realized Elaine was the laughing woman in the audience, but that’s neither here nor there. So if you are still asking what this has to do with the New York Jets – here you go.

The Jets should start Tim Tebow now because it would avoid the inevitable mess. To put it lightly, Mark Sanchez isn’t a very good quarterback, so there is no doubt he is going to struggle. Especially, when three of the first five opponents the Jets face were near the top of the league in pass defense last season. So when Sanchez stinks it up, the media and fans will be screaming for Tim Tebow to get into the lineup, making the quarterback controversy even worse. The pressure will be so large that Rex Ryan will have no choice to give Tim Tebow the majority of snaps against the Indianapolis Colts, ruining the confidence of Sanchez in the process. Then, the Jets finish the season the worst way possible, a ticked off “franchise” quarterback and Tim Tebow as the starting quarterback.

I’m completely down the middle when it comes to Tim Tebow. I don’t think you can win a Super Bowl with him, but he can maybe lead you into the playoffs because of the magic he possesses. If making the playoffs is satisfactory to you, then I can see why Tim Tebow is the guy for you. But if you want to win the Super Bowl, you need a more conventional quarterback than Tim Tebow.

To recap, starting Tim Tebow now allows the inevitable drama to end as quick as possible, giving Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez the upper-hand. That upper-hand is essential because the media will eat Ryan and Sanchez alive when Sanchez fails. If the Jets start Tebow now, he will struggle as well, ending the theory that he is capable of becoming a full-time starter in the NFL, and it lets Mark Sanchez to not look over his shoulder after every turnover he has.

The preemptive quarterback switch. Ends all the drama before it even starts.
