There has been plenty of speculation as to whether or not Kevin Kolb will actually be the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals for the 2012 season–which would be painful to think of from a management perspective considering the team signed him to a hefty deal last summer after he was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite his struggles in 2011, it appears Kolb’s job is at least safe for the start of the 2012 NFL preseason.

Kolb was named the starting quarterback for the team’s first preseason game of the year as the Cardinals will square off against the New Orleans Saints in the 2012 NFL Hall of Fame Game. It’s difficult to imagine a quarterback controversy in Arizona, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Kolb ended up losing the starting job to John Skelton–who finished with a 5-2 record during the regular season last year when Kolb was unable to play.

With Larry Fitzgerald–who is arguably one of the league’s top wide receivers–by his side, there was absolutely no excuse for Kolb to only throw for nine touchdowns in the nine games he appeared in during the 2011 regular season. Plus, the fact that Skelton managed to throw for 11 touchdowns in fewer games shows that Kolb’s job safety as the team’s starting quarterback may not be safe after all if he struggles during the preseason.

At this rate, the starting job is only Kolb’s to lose considering the Cardinals will give him every opportunity in the world to be their top option for the regular season–so it should be interesting to see what happens on Sunday.
