San Antonio’s starters put themselves into a horrible position tonight, as they got down big against a short handed Dallas Mavericks squad. In a game in which the Spurs had no business being down by so much in the first place, they had no business being that close to winning in the second place.

The Spurs starting five of Tim Duncan, DeJuan Blair, Richard Jefferson, Tony Parker, and Kawhi Leonard started the game hot, and got the Spurs to an early six point advantage. Then Vince Carter, or Vinsanity as he was playing tonight, took over and pushed the Spurs into a large, large hole.

With San Antonio playing four games in five days, including the game tonight, Greg Popovich decided to bench his starters to keep them healthy and fresh for the next few games. What happened next nearly shocked the NBA world, and every single Mavericks fan in the arena.

Down 18 points late in the third quarter, the Spurs five of Tiago Splitter, Matt Bonner, Gary Neal, Daniel Green, and James Anderson brought the Spurs all the way back, and even took the lead. They were lights out during a 26-4 run spanning both the third and fourth quarters, including hitting five of six three point attempts.

The Mavs would not go away easy, as Jason Terry put the team on his back en route to a 34 point scoring outburst. Not bad for a sixth man at all.

After a poor Spurs turnover, Jason Terry drove the length of the court and made a pull up jumper with 0.5 seconds left to tie the game at 91 and force overtime. Or so the Mavs thought.

On the ensuing inbounds pass, Daniel Green caught the ball, and swished the 14 footer for the game winner, until replays reviewed that it was less than a tenth of a second late.

After playing part of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter, the bench team stayed out there, and nearly closed out the Mavericks starters, but in the end, Jason Terry was too much, as the Spurs lost 101-100.

Daniel Green had a chance to win it, but his three point attempt at the buzzer clanged off the rim. San Antonio perhaps proved that they have one of the best benches in the league by this performance tonight, as these guys fought back against a 3/4 strong Mavs starting lineup.
