Cairo, Egypt:74 Dead After Soccer Game Riots Continue in Port Said
This is some of the saddest news to date when it comes to the great game of soccer. The game of soccer is meant to be a peaceful sport, kids all across the world play. It is the most popular game in the world. Soccer is not supposed to end up with 74 people dying.
Thousands of Egyptians rallied in support in Port Said for residents reeling from anger directed against the Mediterranean city following a deadly soccer riot there this month that killed 74 people.
This support came after a soccer game at the Port Said stadium after a Feb. 1 match between the local Al-Masry club and the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team shocked Egyptians, which sparked days of deadly street violence in Cairo. Survivors of the stadium riot say Al-Masry supporters stormed the field to attack Al-Ahly fans, stabbing them, undressing them, and tossing them off bleachers while the police looked on.
Port Said residents have been collectively blamed for the stadium riot. Since these riots people are afraid to do simple things, especially afraid to drive out of the city with a Port Said license plate in fear to be attacked or even made fun of. For days after the melee, vegetable and food suppliers from nearby cities refused to deliver to Port Said. Waked, who was among a group of activists, lawmakers, and public figures to visit the city Friday to express their solidarity, said “The physical siege is over, but now there is a moral one”. Waked went on to say, “We are proud of every Egyptian and we reject this siege.”
You have to love the passion for the game but, this story is taking it way too far. I hope the rest of the world can learn from this situation and I hope they can settle down and keep the peace in Port Said.
