This Week in the Public Domain: FC Spartak Moscow
FC Spartak Moscow in 1939 - Public Domain

This is the first in a new series I am starting, called “This Week in the Public Domain.” It’s fairly simple: each time I will post a soccer-related photo from the public domain with a link to further reading.

This inaugural edition is of Spartak Moscow in 1939. I’m not sure if the photo is altered, photoshopped, or collaged in some way, but it definitely doesn’t appear completely authentic. Yet, I absolutely love the two guys in black wearing no uniform at all, unless you count what they’re wearing to be bohemian/beat/hipster/grandpa uniforms. Commies.

Here’s a great article about Spartak, which features a bonus photo of the team playing a ceremonial game in Red Square in front of the Kremlin and Lenin’s mausoleum. You’re welcome.
