Lionel Messi just treated himself to 5 goals against Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of the Champions League last 16.
Already the debate is raging on online about whether this is proof that the maverick playmaker, still only 24-years-old, is the best ever. He is undoubtedly one of the most mesmeric attacker in the game. He has scored 53 goals in only 49 games this season, in either the stripes of Barcelona or of Argentina.
He is being pushed in the race to be top scorer in La Liga by Cristiano Ronaldo, but he is surging ahead of everyone else in the Champions League. Of course he has a breathtaking support cast, but as he bears down on the all time scoring record at Barcelona so early in his career it must be asked: Is Messi the best player of all time?
If he is he may help his club to their third Champions League final in four years. He might not be single handedly winning games for Argentina, but with huge showings like his tonight it will not matter. He may still become a legend before he reaches his thirties.
