Oh my word, Mario Balotelli…

There are few…artists in the world as temperamental as Mad Mario. He does what he wants, when he wants. This is OK, except that his team, Manchester City, is trying to hunt down a first title in the English Premier League. He is forgiven his foibles because he is so talented, but he has been warned by manager Roberto Mancini that he needs to reign himself in.

The impulsive striker said he listened, but evidently not.

The club Manchester City signed Balotelli from was Inter Milan, also Mancini’s former employer. They had just sacked their manager Claudio Ranieri, instantaneously replacing him with Inter youth team boss Andrea Stramaccioni, a highly rated tactician and young coach.

What does this have to do with Balotelli? Well at today’s press conference where Stramaccioni was unveiled Balotelli gate crashed the proceedings in Milan, parking a red Ferrari out front and wandering in to the room in front of journalists, camera crews and Inter Milan officials. He did so with a cheeky grin on his face.

There were handshakes all round, some bewildered glances around the room and then Balotelli was off again to parts unknown.

This maverick generates stories on a whim. It is great for the fans and it is great for bloggers and journalists. For Roberto Mancini, though, he has barely had time to tell his errant striker off before the mischievous Italian is off doing what he wants in another part of the world.

It will be interesting to see if Balotelli plays City’s next crucial league game at home to Sunderland. With every point becoming crucial as the Citizens look to overtake a Manchester United side three points clear in the title race, Roberto Mancini cannot simply hope that Balotelli takes a more laid back approach to the game than he does his social life…
