The St. Louis Rams can finally officially name Jeff Fisher as the newest head coach in franchise history, after the 53-year old picked the Rams over the Miami Dolphins in his return to the National Football League.

Fisher brings 17 years of experience with the Tennessee Titans, which includes six playoff appearances, and an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIV, where the Titans lost to the Rams 23-16.

I had predicted that Fisher was the first man to become head coach of the team that had beat him in the Super Bowl, and my brother, Cody Swartz, confirmed this with a little bit of research.

In 17 seasons, Fisher won 142 of 262 games, good for a .542 winning percentage, plus 5 of 11 postseason games.

He will replace Steve Spagnuolo, who won just 10 games in three seasons as the Rams’ coach. Seven of those victories came in the 2010 season, when the Rams almost captured the NFC West division title despite a losing record.

This was a good move by the Rams because Fisher is an above average head coach and probably better than most of the candidates out there. But I wouldn’t expect it to translate into victories for the Rams right away. They still have a lot of work to do on that team.
