After plenty of speculation, the St. Louis Rams have finally made a decision on who will run the team’s offense under Jeff Fisher in 2012. Former New York Jets’ offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was considered to be the front-runner for the gig from the get-go and that proved to be correct as Schottenheimer was officially named the team’s OC on Saturday.

There will be plenty of skepticism surrounding this hiring given the Jets’ failure to do much of anything on offense this past year and quarterback Mark Sanchez’s apparent regression as the man under center. Rams’ fans had to be looking forward to adding a quarterback guru to teach their prized pupil Sam Bradford a thing or two as his third offensive coordinator in Bradford’s third year as a starter.

Still the Jets making the AFC title game two consecutive years bought Schottenheimer some significant favoritism amongst his coaching brethren, but falling off the edge of the cliff in 2011 was something very few foresaw. His name went from a hot commodity for a potential head coaching candidate last offseason to one of the many unemployed just twelve months later.

He didn’t stay unemployed for long and at just 38 years of age, there is plenty of upside left in the young coaching career of Marty Schottenheimer’s son. According to sources, the battle was close between former Oakland Raiders’ head coach Hue Jackson and Schottenheimer for the position, but Rams’ new head coach Jeff Fisher informed Jackson of his choice on Saturday and the coaching staff in St. Louis is now fully assembled.
